Why does Marjane want to "make her past disappear" (194)? And how does this affect her development as a person?
On page page 194 Marjane narrates, "I wanted to forget everything, to make my past disappear, but my unconscious caught up with me." This quote highlights her internal conflict between her old life and culture in Iran and her new life in Austria. Marjane feels like she needs to forget her life in Iran so she can become more European. This is shown when she pretends to be French at a party. Marjane feels stigmatized by being an Iranian in Austria. Her friends in Iran cannot relate to what she experienced in Iran and some of them even accuse of making up stories.
