The difference between the speaker and the author of a poem is, the speaker of a poem is the person the message of the poem is supposed to be coming from, and the author is the actual writer of the poem. Sometimes the author is the speaker, although often times the author and the speaker are different. For example, in the poem “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins, Billy Collins is both the author and speaker. In other poems, like “Eating Poetry” by Mark Strand it is unclear who the narrator is. It is often important to identify the speaker because it adds meaning to the poem. Knowing who the speaker is gives you context for what they are saying and it helps you understand what they are trying to express. It is important to understand the difference between the speaker and the author of a poem because the author often writes from the viewpoint of a speaker different from his/herself.
