Warriors in Ancient lyric Poetry

I chose to take a picture of a Corinthian helmet because of the role warriors play in ancient poetry,  especially in epic poetry.  Many ancient epic poems are written about the deeds of warriors, thus the helmet.  A poem that exemplifies the role that warriors play is a poem by Tyrtaeus.  In it he talks about how he thinks it is important for a man to learn to fight and be a warrior.  In epic poems like The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus is a violent sword brandishing helmet wearing warrior.  He exemplifies the macho ancient Greek/Roman hero.  In conclusion, ancient lyric poetry contains many stories of heroes like odysseus and others.

  1. Very nice post! I wonder how many other war legions, warriors, and generals (that existed at this time) were portrayed as a work of art. Seems like it was a very popular genre for artists to work on.

  2. Very interesting! War seems to be a very common theme in ancient times and that has effected every part of society and the arts it seems like for that time period.

  3. Great job connecting the art to your sub genre of poetry. Are there any other characteristics from ancient poetry that you think influenced this piece?

  4. I think that you did a really good job connecting this picture to the poems in your sub-genre of poetry. Since I'm working on the same project as you I know that there are a lot of poems that have to do with warriors so I think that you did a really good job connecting the two.

  7. Your post was well thought and you did a great job of delivering. I don't have any questions since I am working on the same sub-genre as you. But I agree with the the others, if possible you could have included other characteristics in Anciebnt Lyric Poetry.

  8. Good post Elliot. I wonder how much influence ancient greek poems had on the populace, as they are certainly very influential today since they define most of classical western ideas. Did the Greeks think the same way about their work? I.e., do you think they ever imagined how popular they would become?

  10. I thought I already commented but I guess I didn't. I liked that you chose something that was not a painting. I thought it was interesting how weaponry was a considered a piece of art. I have not seen that very often, so I thought that was cool.

  11. I really like your post and I like how you related the genre to the piece. I also like how you used the odyssey as an example, considering we will be reading it soon. Good job!
