Why is the Ability to Read and Write a Statement About Freedom?
The ability to read and write is a statement about freedom because it allows you to express yourself.   Literacy allows you to express your own ideas and gain knowledge from the writings of others.  It allows you to self educate by reading books, instead of relying on others to tell you information.  I think American slavery was perpetuated by slaves being denied the opportunity to learn to read and write and without this the were unable to do non labor realated jobs.  Slave owners intentionally made it near near impossible for slaves to educate themselves.  I think slave owners did this so their slaves would have few opportunities if they escaped.  In conclusion, education provides opportunities and knowledge is power.  Without knowledge, one cannot have have true freedom.
