The Separation of Slave Families

Slaves were often separated from their families because slave owners thought if they were separated they would be more effective workers. The slave owners may have also thought if slave did not feel connected to their families, they would not want to escape to reunite with them.  I do not think there was much of a benefit for the masters.  I think the separation of slave families was just one of many atrocities instigated by slave owners and implicitly supported by everyone else in early America and the rest of the world.  When children born into slavery were separated from their parents it not only traumatized them, but it left a last impact on their mental health because they had no clear guardian.
